The F word… Furlough
My business launch announcement story starts all the way back at the beginning of the pandemic. This time last year, the world was about one month into full-on panic mode with the COVID-19 global pandemic. I was a full-time flight attendant who wasn’t actually flying and the word FURLOUGH was hanging over my head.
At that time furlough wasn’t yet a sure thing, but the airline industry had all but frozen. I knew then that I couldn’t rely on a paycheck coming from other people. I needed something more sustainable.
Past jobs I had in marketing, styling, and photography all had aspects I enjoyed but were never quite right. My degree in fine art was fun, but not practical.
But something all of those past roles and responsibilities taught me was that creativity is valuable in the marketplace. I decided last year to hone in on those strengths, to sharpen them. I wanted to start something new before making a big business launch announcement.
Here’s the “magic” formula to keep in mind when you’re trying to figure out what to launch or create. A potential pursuit should hit three main categories: Something you enjoy + something you are good at + something valuable in the marketplace = One amazing product/business. For me, that was professional brand photography.
So how did I start a business?
I started my own business by first looking for needs that other people had, and then working to be the person to fill those needs. If someone needed blog posts written, I did it. If someone wanted social media management, I did it. With each job I accepted, I learned more about what I really wanted to do and the business branding services I wanted to provide.
If you know you want to start a business but have no idea what you actually want it to look like yet, I think this is a great place to start. Begin with what you know and whatever skills you already have. Be willing to try things out, to connect with people, and to learn.
